Project Overview

General Iron, a Chicago-based metal recycling company, began planning for a new facility on Chicago’s southeast side in 2018. Raffin Construction partnered with general contractor The George Sollitt Construction Company to provide all concrete services for the project. The Raffin Construction team built the heavy equipment foundations, building foundations and slabs, containment walls, and exterior flatwork. The foundations and building slabs accounted for 24,000 cubic yards of concrete and 500 tons of rebar. The new facility, renamed Southside Recycling, uses the latest in environmental protection technology and has the capacity to recycle up to 1 million tons of obsolete metal products annually, keeping material about equivalent to the total amount of garbage collected in Chicago out of landfills each year.
